Nigeria’s political net generation

March 26, 2010

Nigerian netizens with nom de nets like Dissapointed, Country man, Omo Alhaja etc, are redefining democracy. They are getting wired over cabinet nominees.

However, the jury is still out as to whether the net generation is actively plugged-in ie, is a genuinely politically engaged net savvy youth in the making? Anonymously expressing political views, sharing political news, joining political causes on social networks is welcome. But we can’t stop at political activism broadcasting.

How about stepping up to e-mailing public officials, making online political donations or simply sending texts to a site like Ushahidi that can help track and curb violence and vote rigging during the next elections? Two Ushahidi-type sites, here and here, have been set up for Naija.
