Democracy? Freedom? Justice? Law? What’s all this?

August 1, 2009

The title isn’t original. It’s from an article in the millennium edition of The Economist. For me it’s good background reading for three reviews by the Financial Times, Times Online and The Times of India (lots of times eh?) on a new book: The Idea of Justice by Amartya Sen, 1998 Nobel prize-winning economist.

So far, his one economist whose definition and approach to economics resonates with me. For Prof Sen, “Economic growth cannot be sensibly treated as an end in itself. Development has to be more concerned with enhancing the lives we lead and the freedoms we enjoy.”
